Participants trained during the 6 weeks leading up to the games in 17 different sports including Atheletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Fencing, Football, Gaelic Football, Golf, Hockey, Indoor Bowls, Nets, Sailing, Sitting Volleyball, Squash, Table Tennis, Tenpin Bowling and Touch Rugby.

During the closing parade around the Footes Lane Track children were lead by their district deputy and sports coaches. West was then announced as the winning district, while St Peter Port won the Fair Play award for good sportsmanship. Trophies were presented by Specsavers founder Dame Mary Perkins, each child also received a medal for participating in the games.

Children were encouraged to try a new sport, with an emphasis on keeping active while having fun and supporting team mates. Andrea Lord, the Youth Games co-ordinator said it had been the “best ever” Specsavers Youth Games. She commented that “The benefits and experiences gained from learning a new sport cannot be underestimated, the event helps teach children about team spirit. They have been encouraged to meet children from different schools, learn a new skill and to be active.”

The Guernsey Sports Commission would like to thank all Youth Games volunteers, coaches, officials, competitors and our sponsors.
