Hundreds of Islanders Get Active at our Family Fun Day

30th June 2016

Around 700 islanders of all ages enjoyed trying out over 15 different sports at the Family Fun Day that was recently held at the KGV.

Organised by the Guernsey Sports Commission and Generali Worldwide, the event was hailed as a success by everyone involved.

“Everybody seemed to be having fun, which was the whole idea of the day. It was nice to see so many children having a go at sports that they would not normally have a chance to try”, said Graham Chester, Guernsey Sports Commission’s Operations Director.

One of the Guernsey Sports Commission organisers, Jenny Murphy, agreed:
“We’ve had lots of positive feedback from the Fun Day. We had parents tell us that they didn’t realise the variety of sports that are on offer in Guernsey, and also children who discovered new activities to take up”.

This was the second year that the Fun Day was organised and many of the sports that featured at last year’s event returned. The Sports Commission set a challenge for youngsters to try eight sports, with prizes for those who completed the activities.

Boxing was one of the new sports on offer this year and Kerri Jehan from the Guernsey Boxing Club commented: “We had an absolutely fantastic time – we hardly stopped all day and now have some youngsters coming to the club to give boxing another go”.

Fencing and judo also proved to be very popular, along with basketball and Gaelic football.

The Fun Day spread out over the KGV playing fields and the 4G pitches. Special guests, Louis the Lobster and Guernsey FC’s Roary the Lion, were also welcomed.

The Fun Day is part of the Get Active Stay Active campaign that is a result of Generali Worldwide’s donation to the Sports Commission in 2015. The scheme aims to bring sport and the benefits of an active lifestyle to the widest possible audience and all the sports activities were free of charge.

Giorgio Daboni, Chief Executive Officer, Generali Worldwide in Guernsey, commented: “It was great to have so many islanders trying a new activity and enjoying the day. We are delighted to see our donation being used for these kinds of community events”.
