Tennis Festival is a Hit With Year 4

28th February 2017

20 Year 4 children were welcomed at a Tennis Festival held at the Guernsey Tennis Centre. For many of the children it was their first experience of playing tennis in the community and the festival provided the children with the opportunity to meet local coaches at a first class facility in a fun and engaging environment.

The children were organised into 4 teams; Argentina, France, Spain and Great Britain. Each child played 7 timed matches against children from different teams, with players also taking on the role of umpiring each match. Across all 6 courts there were some very close matches with the children soon developing an understanding of the rules and how to score points against their opponent.

The progression made during the 2 hour festival was fantastic to see with many players previously having only experienced tennis during their PE lessons with Ollie, Kerri or Steph.

After all the games were complete, the final scores were calculated to see who were the team winners. With 65 points overall, Spain (Eddie, Owen, Noah, Jack and Matthew) were the 2017 winners and collected medals from Island Games medalist and Guernsey No.1 – Rob West. Also rewarded were 3 players of the day – Ollie, Steph and Kerri were actively looking for children who were consistently showing good sportsmanship, perseverance, effort, officiating and behaviour. Max, Riley and Harry were the stand out 3 and also took home a medal.

Thanks to sponsors BNP Paribas, each participant received a goodie bag with a t-shirt and a hat as well as a certificate for participating. Well done to all that chose to take part in our 2nd community festival event.
