Helena is Fastest Girl at 10 Mile Time Trial

28th September 2017

The National Youth 10 mile Time Trial Championship Final was held at Sawtry in Cambridgeshire on Saturday 9th September and Guernsey fielded a squad of girls and boys across the 12-16 year old age categories.

This was Helena Duguid’s first GHS final having qualified with the other riders in the regional event which was held in Guernsey earlier in the year. A keen member of the Guernsey Velo Club this is her first year riding time trials and she had never ridden her TT bike off-Island before.

With great support from the more experienced riders and Club President Gary Walbridge she approached the event with apprehension and only had one aim to beat her best time of just over 30 minutes set in Guernsey.

The 140 riders went off at 1 minute intervals on the ‘out and back’ 10 mile course on the old A1 North Road which also involved negotiating four roundabouts. Conditions on the day were poor with heavy rain and a headwind, but there was on-course support from the parents who had accompanied the squad.

Helena did not know how she had done until we went to the race HQ, but was delighted to find out after reviewing all the times that she was fastest girl in her category with a new personal best of 28′ 41″.  She was presented with her winners medal, but there will be a formal awards ceremony in the New Year.

It has taken a few days to sink in but Helena was delighted with her result and is keen to do more events and wants to return next year with the hope of improving on this.
