Tennis Taster Proves a Big Hit
26th February 2018
The Guernsey Sports Commission teamed up with the coaches from Guernsey Tennis Club to offer a one off taster session event for children in Year 4 from all of Guernsey's primary schools. 31 children took up the free opportunity held on the indoor courts at the Guernsey Tennis Club. Children were split into 6 different countries and played a series of matches to 5 points. The children were tasked with umpiring each others games which gave them the opportunity to watch others play and to learn more about the game. After the first set of matches the children were then re-grouped to earn points for their country. The matches proved to be very close with many being won by only a single point.
Rob West, coach at the Guernsey Tennis Club, explained why trying a new sport is so important. "You can learn so much through playing sport, lots of values such as sportmanship and playing fairly as well as social skils. Its been great to see so many children here today trying out tennis for the first time."
The winning team with 94 points were Switzerland (Eloise, Thomas K, Sam, Zak and Luca). Coaches and GSC team members then also selected 5 individuals who shone during the festival event. Medals were awarded to Thomas W, Jessica, Barney, Niamh and Lily Anne.
