Research shows that teenage girls are most at risk of dropping out of sport.
Charity, Women in Sport, has found that more than 1 million teenage girls in the UK who once considered themselves ‘sporty’, disengage from sport once they leave primary school.
Taking part in physical activity can have a profound and positive effect on mental wellbeing as well as providing many pivotal life skills such as resilience, teamwork and communication.
This makes it even more important to increase the breadth of sporting opportunities available to girls and to break down some of the barriers to them participating.
The Ladies’ College is just one local school offering golf at Golf 19 as an option for girls to try and it’s proving to be popular.
‘Sport is essential for both physical and mental wellbeing so it's important to help our students find an activity they enjoy and can continue into their adult lives,’ said Ladies College Director of Sport, Helen Le Maitre.
‘Golf offers a different experience to the more traditional sports on the curriculum, so we are grateful to Andy at Golf19 for introducing the girls to this activity.’
And if the girls enjoy their first experience of golf there is a clear pathway for them to carry on through the work of the new Girls into Golf Squad, who are working hard to attract new female players to the local game.
‘It can bring the girls so much,’ said Angela Goddard, chair of the Women’s Development Squad who is spearheading the new group. ‘I’ve played golf since my early 20s and it’s so sociable, you make great friends and have such a lovely time and it’s lots of fun.’
Women’s golf in Guernsey is definitely on the up with increasing numbers now moving up to the Women's Development Squad, including girls moving up from the junior ranks.
But the drive is clearly to welcome new players to the game starting with those from Year 3 upwards who can get a fun introduction to the game.
