Guernsey mascots to return for the Utmost Community Sports Funday

August 29, 2023

The Utmost Community Sports Funday will see the return of the much-loved mascot challenge on Saturday 2 September at Saumarez Park.

Mascots including Utmost’s Islands Games Team Mascot Darcy the Donkey, St John Guernsey’s Bertie Badger, Butterfield’s Vern the Wyvern, Cricket’s Owlzat the Owl and  Rugby’s Rocky the Raider will compete against each other in a friendly obstacle course challenge to become the Utmost Community Sports Funday champion for 2023.

As the mascots warm-up, children are encouraged to come along to take part and help the mascots through the challenge and to show encouragement.

Working with The Guernsey Sports Commission, this free community event will offer over 20 sports for everyone to try including boxing, climbing, golf, skateboarding, fencing, football, cricket, netball, badminton and cycling. Regardless of age and ability, all islanders are welcome and will be encouraged to get involved.

The event will begin at 12 pm with the mascot challenge taking place at 1 pm and the day concluding at 4 pm. Admission is free.

Nicky Will, Director of Communications for the Guernsey Sports Commission, said: ‘We are excited about the return of the mascot challenge for the Utmost Community Sports Funday this year. This is a great opportunity for the community to come and have fun with their children, get involved with the mascot challenge, cheer them on and get photos with their favourites too.

‘There are many benefits to both our physical and mental health that taking part in sport provides, and we want to encourage people of all ages and sporting abilities within the community to come along and have a go.’

Leon Steyn, Chief Executive Officer, Utmost International Guernsey, said: ‘We’re thrilled to bring back the much-loved mascot challenge this year.

‘We hope the community will be excited to engage in the Funday again this year and learn more about staying healthy and energised.’
