The next generation of Island triathletes, karters, cyclists and horse riders are some of the beneficiaries of the travel bursary relaunched by Brittany Ferries and the Guernsey Sports Commission.

This joint initiative has been confirmed for 2025 and directly benefits up-and-coming local athletes to attend events, training, trials and competitions in the UK or France by travelling on the ferry company’s network.

The Guernsey Sports Commission oversees the selection of appropriate recipients, aged 13 to 23 with applications accepted from any sport, although targeted primarily at those who usually travel with equipment or vehicles.

Paul Acheson, Brittany Ferries’, Group Sales and Marketing, said: “We are proud to partner with the Guernsey Sports Commission and benefit from their expertise in identifying and supporting young athletes who show exceptional promise.

“Our involvement in local sport has shown us just how much talent exists in the Island. We know that for many young people, opportunities to compete and train abroad can make all the difference — and we are pleased to play a part in helping them take that next step.”

Graham Chester, Operations Director for the Sports Commission, thanked Brittany Ferries for their support.

“Competing and training off-island is essential for many of our aspiring young sports people but we know that the cost of travel can sometimes be a barrier, particularly when they need to travel with a parent or coach or take bulky sports equipment with them.

“This support from Brittany Ferries will certainly provide an additional boost by increasing travel opportunities to the UK and France for those young people who regularly compete or train off-island and will work alongside our established Sport Development Fund,” said Graham.
