The Guernsey Sports Commission has joined the e-bike revolution thanks to sponsorship from local company Strategic Risk Solutions.
The Commission now has three e-bikes for staff to use to get to and from schools and other extra-curricular sports activities.
‘Strategic Risk Solutions approached us a few months ago to see how they could help,’ said Steve Sharman, the Commission’s Relationship Director.
‘We listened to their company vision and ethos and suggested that they might like to help us improve our active travel credentials.
‘Our staff generally work across two different primary schools and also support a lot of extra curricular and sports club activities and so these e-bikes will make a huge difference,’ said Steve.
‘This really is the perfect fit for us,’ said Peter Child, Managing Director of Strategic Risk Solutions.
‘It’s all about the freedom that comes from independence which reflects our values. As we are relatively new on the island we wanted to start as we mean to go on and be part of the local community. The Sports Commission works across the whole of sport on the island and it’s great to be supporting those who give our children their first introduction to sport.’
PE & Sport Development Officers Steve Eulenkamp and Dave Harfield jumped at the chance to use the new e-bikes.
‘I haven’t really driven the car for five weeks now,’ said Steve who uses the standard e-bike to travel to Hautes Capelles and St Mary & St Michael Schools as well as travelling to hockey training and weekend games.
‘It feels great to be able to support the schools’ drive to encourage all children and staff to think about active travel and to do my bit to try to reduce the number of cars on the road,’ said Steve.
Dave uses the cargo e-bike to take his children to school in the morning before heading off to wherever he is working for the day.
‘I can fit both kids on the back for the short journey to school and don’t get stuck in the traffic or worry about finding a place to park to drop them off,’ said Dave.
‘It’s really easy to ride and sets a great example to both my kids and the ones I teach.’
The third e-bike is based at the Commission’s office next to Beau Sejour and is available for any of the other staff to use as and when they need.
‘I would like to say a big thank you to Ian Browns Cycleshop who supplied the e-bikes and of course to SRS for their support,’ said Steve Sharman.
